While several of the cues are agreeably heavy and dramatic, thick with pressure and emphatic notes that come stomping down intervals like heavy boots on stairs, it's for the swinging jazz cues that most people picked up this record.

Certainly this is a post-Man with the Golden Arm score, and you can hear the influence of Elmer Bernstein's relentless, shadowy yet energetically swinging music in these cues.

But this is its own thing, with great playing by the rhythm section and reed soloists in particular.
