2024 December 23 • Monday

Wow. December 23, 2024. Exactly 49 years to the day since President Ford signed the Metric Conversion Act. Damn. I hope something awesome is planned for the 50th anniversary next year.

For now, though, let's just listen to David Spear's music for 1984's Exterminator 2, the 836th Soundtrack of the Week!

The "Opening Titles/Police Scanner" cue starts off on the jaunty side of things before settling into the main theme, which is almost like a mash up of Bach, Jan Hammer and John Barry. Here it's restrained and laidback but you'll hear it in several other cues with an aggressive backbeat and synth playing.

It gets sped up, slowed down, arranged for different instruments. Almost every cue is a version of this piece of music so it's a good thing that it's cool.

Of course there's a love theme and it has a vocal version performed as a duet with synth and drums accompaniment.

This release includes the album version as well as the original film score and both are excellent. The latter also includes some unused cues.

Happy Metric Conversion Day!
